A Vanilla Gift Card is a prepaid, non-reloadable Visa or Mastercard gift card sold under the Vanilla brand. It spends like a debit card anywhere that brand’s debit cards are accepted in the United States, but it is not linked to a bank account and there is no credit check. You spend the amount loaded at purchase.

Delivered by email and already active. It can be added to a mobile wallet. It cannot be swiped as plastic unless the merchant accepts that wallet.
There is no name on the card. People use Vanilla gift cards for gifts, rebates, and one-time spending. This page covers only the one-time, non-reloadable Vanilla Gift and Vanilla Prepaid card — sold as a Visa or Mastercard gift card.
Vanilla gift cards are distributed and serviced by InComm Financial Services, Inc. (InComm Payments), a money transmitter licensed by the New York State Department of Financial Services, NMLS ID 912772. InComm is an Atlanta-area payments company. Cardholder agreements list customer mail at P.O. Box 826, Fortson, GA 31808. Other public filings also use a Columbus, Georgia address. The bank named on the back of your card is the issuer for that card.
Issuers named on current Vanilla and InComm materials include:
Not every name appears on every card. If your card names a different bank, that name controls.
The one-time, non-reloadable prepaid gift card this guide covers.
The Mastercard-network version of the same one-time gift card. Same rules, different network.
The shopping site is vanillagift.com. The balance and activation portal is balance.vanillagift.com. Type both yourself. Do not use a link from a search ad, email, or text. Names that are not that portal include myvanillagiftcard.com, vanilla.gift, and misspellings such as “ballancevanillagift”. A page that asks for your card number on any other domain is not the official balance check.
Physical Vanilla Visa and Vanilla Mastercard gift cards are sold from racks at grocery stores, pharmacies, and big-box retailers, and online at VanillaGift.com. Loads are commonly $10 to $500. The purchase fee is set at the register or checkout and is not the same at every store.
A physical Vanilla Visa or Vanilla Mastercard gift card has to be activated before you can spend it. An eGift does not. It is already active when it arrives.
If the sleeve looks resealed, the barcode area is scratched, or the security panel looks peeled, do not activate it. Take it back to the store with the receipt. Also check that the cashier actually scanned the package. At self-checkout, a missed barcode can mean you were charged and the card was never funded. That is a store-load problem, not the same thing as card draining.
Check the balance right after activation and again before you pay. That is the habit that catches a drained card, a missed store load, and a hold that is still sitting on the balance.
| Method | How | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Online | balance.vanillagift.com with the card number, Valid Thru date, and security code. | Any time, including recent transactions |
| Phone | 1-833-322-6760 | No internet, or the site is erroring |
| In store | Ask the cashier for a balance inquiry. Not every store can do it. | A last check at the register |
The balance site sometimes fails with a generic system-error message. That message alone does not mean the card is empty.
A Vanilla gift card is not an Amazon gift code. Do not paste the 16-digit number into Amazon’s “redeem a gift card” field. Add it as a credit or debit card and use your own name and billing ZIP.
Vanilla’s FAQ says both physical cards and eGifts can be added to Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay. That is the practical way to tap an eGift in a store that accepts the wallet.
After purchase, the one-time Vanilla gift card is built as a no-monthly-fee product. The cost is the purchase fee at the register or on VanillaGift.com. That fee is not one national price.
| Fee | What to expect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase / activation fee | Often about $2.95–$9.95 | Charged once, usually scaled to the load. Retailers differ, and the fee has moved over time. Online promo codes on VanillaGift.com sometimes waive it. Read the fee on the package or at checkout. |
| Monthly fee | $0 | No ongoing monthly fee on this card. |
| Inactivity fee | $0 | Not charged on this card. |
| Gift box | Optional | VanillaGift.com has offered a gift-box handling charge around $2.95. Confirm the live checkout price. It is not required. |
| Reload | Not offered | This gift card cannot be reloaded. |
The funds do not expire. Vanilla’s FAQ says the Valid Thru date is not a real expiration of the money. It exists so the card can be typed into checkouts and for fraud controls, and it can be set up to 14 years out. If that date passes with a balance left, call 1-833-322-6760 for a replacement. Cardholder agreements for these gift cards say you are not charged a replacement fee when the replacement is only because the Valid Thru date passed.
The card has a fixed balance and no overdraft. If a merchant authorizes more than the purchase, and that authorization is larger than the balance, the charge is declined even when the final bill would have fit.
Vanilla’s own FAQ says that paying at the pump can place a hold for the lesser of up to $175 or the full balance. Prepay a specific amount inside instead of paying at the pump.
| Where | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Gas, pay at the pump | Hold of up to $175, or the full balance if that is lower. This figure is from Vanilla’s FAQ. | Prepay inside for a set dollar amount. |
| Restaurants | Vanilla says restaurants often add about 20% for a tip. | Leave the tip in cash, or use a card with extra room. |
| Hotels, rental cars, cruises, salons | Vanilla does not publish one dollar amount. These merchants often authorize more than the bill for incidentals or gratuity. Treat the size of that hold as the merchant’s policy. | Ask before you book. A credit card is often required for the deposit. |
Vanilla says the merchant can take up to 7 business days to finalize the charge and release the extra hold. Do not plan to spend that held amount the same day.
Card draining works like this. Someone takes an unsold card out of the sleeve, copies the card number, Valid Thru date, and security code, reseals the package, and puts it back. The card is worthless until a shopper pays and the store loads it. The thief watches the balance and spends it, sometimes within minutes of activation.
This is documented, not a rumor:
The public record is split. Buying a digital card on VanillaGift.com draws plenty of ordinary praise. Spending the card, reaching a person, and recovering a drained balance draw a long, consistent complaint trail. Counts below are snapshots, not live scores.
This guide does not print a 5-star bar chart. Trustpilot’s TrustScore is not a plain average of the stars, and the profile snapshot used here did not expose a stable percentage breakdown worth charting. Trustpilot’s own recent-review summary says many people find buying digital gift cards on the site fast and convenient, while others report unhelpful support, unexpected declines, and site errors. The profile was claimed in March 2025. In that same late-September 2026 snapshot, Trustpilot showed the company replying to about 76% of negative reviews, typically within a week, and noted it may use AI-assisted replies.
A recurring 5-star theme is that ordering an eGift on the website was fast and the purchase fee was clear.
Paraphrased from Trustpilot themes, not a single verified quotation.A recurring 1-star theme is that the toll-free line stays in an automated menu, or that a balance falls to zero and support does not restore it.
Paraphrased from Trustpilot themes, not a single verified quotation. Those percentages are ConsumerAffairs’ own rounded bars on that date, not a fresh hand count. The profile is unclaimed and points at vanillaprepaid.com, so it mixes the one-time gift card with other Vanilla prepaid products. Complaint sites also over-represent people who had a problem. Even with that bias, the volume is hard to ignore: missing value, system errors, cards missing a security code, and disputes that reviewers say sat for 30 to 40 days.
InComm Financial Services, Inc. is BBB Accredited on its Columbus, Georgia profile. Accreditation is not a clean complaint record. That profile has recently shown on the order of 2,500 to 3,000 complaints in a three-year window. The counter moves, so this guide does not freeze one total. Customer-review averages on InComm BBB profiles have sat near 1.1 out of 5. The March 2022 Cleveland 19 investigation separately reported more than 600 BBB complaints about Vanilla Visa gift cards. Typical complaints: a card blocked as suspicious after activation, a replacement that is slow or short, and unauthorized transactions that an investigation does not repay.
People review bad trips more than uneventful ones. Most cards are probably bought, activated, and spent without a post. The pattern that repeats across Trustpilot, ConsumerAffairs, the BBB, local news, and the court docket is still specific: drained racks, holds that look like declines, and slow recovery when the balance is wrong. That is enough reason to inspect the package and check the balance the same day.
As a gift, a Vanilla Visa or Vanilla Mastercard gift card does the simple job: no bank account, no credit check, and no monthly fee after the purchase fee. You cannot reload it, and you cannot take it abroad.
The serious risk is not the fee table. Racks have been drained often enough to draw a city lawsuit, a senator’s letter to the FTC, and a federal case that was dismissed in June 2025 and then dropped without prejudice in February 2026. Security holds can freeze a real card. When the balance is wrong, public reviews describe a slow phone process. None of that means most cards fail. It means you should inspect the package, activate and check the balance the same day, keep the receipt, and call 1-833-322-6760 the same day a balance looks wrong.
If you only need the balance, use balance.vanillagift.com. This page cannot see your card.
